Worse are the ignorant comments made by reporters as to why this is being done.

For example: Publishers worry that the digital copy never wears out so they can't sell another copy to the library because-Libraries buy replacments when their hardcopy wears out. (Not if it is out of print and the publisher won't reprint.)
That's the most sickening part where the publishers says they want to support traditional library service of hardcopy books but they make no commitment to print on demand.

Another theory was that we let just anybody on the web check out our materials. Obviously the reporter has never used the library and is unfamiliar with library cards and loan periods.

Subject: [Lswtalk] Penguin suspends library e-books

Just saw this today in USA Today, AP has it on web. Penguin suspends library e-books AND won't allow libraries to loan any e-books for Amazon.com's Kindle. Authors included are Patricia Cornwell, Ken Follett, Ron Chernow and Sue Grafton.
