Jane Friedman has had a long and unusually successful career in publishing<http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/14/books/14fried.html?_r=0>. She began as a typist for Knopf, then moved into the publicity department. Friedman is credited with inventing the author tour, when she sent Julia Child on a cooking demonstration junket in 1970.

Friedman was steadily promoted into then-parent company Random House, where she founded their audio division and eventually became executive vice president. In 1994, she had the foresight to insert an “electronic versions” rights clause into Random House author contracts long before eBooks became a reality. Friedman left Random House to become CEO of HarperCollins, where she improved profits by 1000 percent during her decade-long tenure. The industry was shocked when, in 2008, she resigns amidst rumors that Rupert Murdoch wanted her out.

But 16 months after she left HarperCollins, Friedman was back. Drawing on 40 years of publishing experience, Friedman launched Open Road Integrated Media<http://www.openroadmedia.com/> and focused on a new niche—digital publishing. Open Road identifies top-notch books that have never been published in digital format and makes them available as eBooks. The venture has been a great success, and in 2011 Friedman was named to Fortune Magazine’s “10 Most Powerful Women<http://www.mediabistro.com/appnewser/open-roads-jane-friedman-makes-fortune-magzines-10-most-powerful-women-list_b16>” list. Open Road has also found success publishing e-originals<http://www.businessinsider.com/jane-friedman-open-road-integrated-media-ebooks-publishing-2011-8?op=1>.

Open Road’s offerings make smart additions to any digital collection. They’re good books that have proven popular with readers. Authors include Erma Bombeck, Jimmy Breslin, Pearl Buck, Octavia E. Butler, Erskine Caldwell, Caroline B. Cooney, Loren D. Estleman, Fredrick Forsyth, Eileen Goudge, David Halberstam, Susan Howatch, Susan Isaacs, John Jakes, Lois Lenski, Joan Lowery Nixon, Ruth Rendell, Muriel Spark, Gloria Steinem, Leon Uris, Alice Walker, Rosemary Wells, Timothy Zahn and more.
