The Venron Parish Library is please to announce a special program Tuesday, June 19 at 3 p.m. with J. Nathan Bland, a Leesville native.
 
June 19, 2012 at 3 p.m., the Vernon Parish Library will host Hometown Diplomats Program, U.S. Dept. Of State The purpose of this program is to put a hometown face on foreign policy and to explain to America what the Department does and why it matters. J. Nathan Bland, a Leesville native, will be the guest speaker.
Nathan graduated from Leesville High School in 1996 and from Louisiana College in December, 2000 with a B.S. in Business Administration.  He then went to Xinjiang, China to teach English for 1 ½  years before attending graduate school at Seton Hall University's School of Diplomacy and International Relations.  Nathan graduated from Seton Hall with an M.A. in Diplomacy and International Relations and an M.A. in Asian Studies.  He began his career with the U.S. Department of State as a Presidential Management Fellow working in the Public Affairs Office for the East Asia and Pacific Affairs Bureau in 2004.  
He joined the Foreign Service in 2006 and served his first tour as a Consular Officer at the U.S. Consulate in Shenyang, China interviewing Chinese applicants seeking visas to enter the United States and providing a wide range of assistance to American Citizens in China.  He recently finished his second assignment as the Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See where he handled media relations and public outreach for the mission, and organized international conferences and cultural events.  He is currently on his third assignment in Washington D.C. at the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs where he plays a leading role in U.S. Government international engagement on marine environmental protection in the Caribbean, ocean dumping, and oil and hazardous spills.
