Examples from real machines:

RHEL ES 2.1u2:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 2.1 (Panama)
Kernel \r on an \m

RHEL WS 3:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS release 3 (Taroon)
Kernel \r on an \m

RHEL WS 3 on IA64:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS release 3 (Taroon)

RHEL ES 3:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 3 (Taroon)
Kernel \r on an \m

I don't have AS3, but I assume it would be the same just replacing ES with
AS. Also, based on what Veritas Netbackup looks for in
/etc/redhat-release, I would assume AS2.1 (not update 2 or 3) would look
like:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux release 2.1AS
Kernel \r on an \m

Perhaps in the FAQ we can put a note explaining how to extract just the
redhat-release file from RedHat's RPMs if it is required for a particular
package.

Also, based on the packages I have looked at, they look for a line
matching a regex in the file, so it might be possible to do something like

Whitebox Enterprise Linux release 3.0 (Liberation) - compatible with
Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 3 (Taroon)
Kernel \r on an \m

It is really ugly, but the browser user agent strings are a precedent and
it might help less technically inclined users run WBEL.
