Yep, my buddy has a machine from roughly the same era that has
nearly identical problems.  I'll bet you have an i810 or i810e
AGP card.

I'm fairly sure this bug is the one that has the patch that fixes
the problem:

Assuming my guess is correct, the U4 update will solve the problem.
If you don't want to wait that long, I can help you roll your own.
