I've resolved the whole situation by backing up my home directory and
then deleting the user through root, and then creating a new user and
hey presto, gnome is back! :)

Now I can add items to the kde menu by using kmenuedit at the command
line, but how can I add items to the gnome menu please? I've tried
gmenuedit but nothing happened, and I've tried googling for the answer,
but I'm obviously not phrasing it right as most things that I find don't
answer my problem.
