The mistake is trying to use sendmail, man. Sendmail is an *excellent* piece
of software - IF YOU NEED IT. And seems that you don't. Trust me, try
postfix.

Well all I can say is that I once asked a machinist who worked for us
how he got to be so good at making delicate and intricate scientific
instruments.

He pointed to his scrap box and said, he got to be good at it by making
a lot of mistakes and learning from them.

I'm not a sendmail expert, but I am learning from my mistakes.

Anyone who *NEEDS* sendmail knows how to configure it... otherwise, you
don't *NEED* it - then you'd better use postfix ;)

I am running WBEL-3.0, and I am having difficulty configuring sendmail.

I installed the sendmail-cf program from disk #3.

Then I commented out the line

DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=127.0.0.1, Name=MTA')dnl

Then I tried make -C /etc/mail

But nothing was changed.

I also tried m4 /etc/mail/sendmail.mc > /etc/sendmail.cf

That produced a new sendmail.cf file.

I rebooted and tried to send mail from the machine using the mail
program as
follows

mail mshapiro@fullerton.edu < testfile

This fails with the following error message:

If I use the Evolution mail program to send a mail message, then the
mail
gets sent properly.

I also cannot send mail to the machine: The error messages look like
the
following:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

      Subject: Test message
      Sent: 1/19/2004 11:23 AM

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

      mshapiro@ion4.fullerton.edu on 1/19/2004 11:23 AM
You do not have permission to send to this recipient. For
assistance, contact your system administrator.
            < mail3.fullerton.edu #5.7.1 SMTP; 550 5.7.1
<mshapiro@ion4.fullerton.edu>... Relaying denied>

I've probably failed to configure something in the system properly. Any
suggestions for correcting the sending problem (needed to send mail from
some scripts I use), and for correcting the receiving problem would be
greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
