Hit CTRL-ALT-F1, login as root

Type mouseconfig

Pick your mouse

After you exit mouseconfig, hit CTRL-ALT-F7 (the usual VT where X lives)
Press CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE

Move your mouse and confirm correct operation.
