We have a new forum for WhiteBox users setup at www.whiteboxforum.com Feel
free to sign up and start posting, if anyone is interested in being an admin
or moderator just let me know...it can be customized to suit everyones
needs. We just felt that since more and more people are starting to use
WhiteBox that a forum would be an added asset since you can do searches and
see other users questions and answers more readily. Thanks.

Dave,

Not sure what all you've tried, but I've got a number of cards
at home that only work with the kernel-unsupported RPM's installed.
That has a lot of obscure modules in it. I know that's the one I
have to install to get the bttv.o modules for my WinTV card.

	Good luck,

By default, logrotate should rotate the logs every week, and keep up to
four weeks worth. Perhaps you accidently stopped the cron the job from
running.

Make sure this log-rotate script is still set to run daily. Also note
that you can have logrotate compress your log files, which might be a
good idea in your case (if you don't mind the overhead).

My cron job and logrotate.conf file :

[ladar@staci cron.daily]$ cat logrotate
#!/bin/sh

/usr/sbin/logrotate /etc/logrotate.conf
EXITVALUE=$?
if [ $EXITVALUE != 0 ]; then
/usr/bin/logger -t logrotate "ALERT exited abnormally with
[$EXITVALUE]"
fi
exit 0
[ladar@staci cron.daily]$ cat /etc/logrotate.conf
# see "man logrotate" for details
# rotate log files weekly
weekly

# keep 4 weeks worth of backlogs
rotate 4

# create new (empty) log files after rotating old ones
create

# uncomment this if you want your log files compressed
#compress

# RPM packages drop log rotation information into this directory
include /etc/logrotate.d

# no packages own wtmp -- we'll rotate them here
/var/log/wtmp {
    monthly
    create 0664 root utmp
    rotate 1
}

# system-specific logs may be also be configured here.

Let me know if you have any more problems.

Hello,
I was wondering if there was some documentation on possibly
using LogRotate to cut back on the sizes of my webserver log file..
Some of them are huge (probably the largest is a gig or two, maybe
more)..

I would like to delete everything before Jan 2001 and will
LogRotate allow me to do this? I point in the right direction would
greatly be appreciated.. Thanks..

I would also start with installing the appropriate unsupported kernel.
Although it did not solve my D-Link DGE-5000SX driver issue, it solved
others such as NCPFS. The weird thing is, that prior to their sale to
AMCC, JNI frequently mentioned Linux driver support. Here is an
semi-old link from fibrechannel.org that discusses their unix
driversuite and specifically the linux portion. It does contain a
number to call, but who knows. The URL's have obviously changed as
well. Good luck.

Another really useful option is "delaycompress"

The current log and the most recently rotated copy are uncompressed for
searching, etc. Older rotations are fully compressed.

Maybe -- give it a try! Maybe you should ask an outlook users's list if
they've seen this problem before?

Details would also be helpful, for example, what error message? What
program are you trying to import it with? What version of outlook?
What version of the program you're importing it with?

If your log files are growing unwieldy you can increase the frequency of
rotation from weekly to daily. If you do this, then set the number of
rotations to keep to a larger number so you keep the same number of days
like 28 or 35.

I have a server where the web traffic logs are over 2GB for a week and
the traffic analyzer was throwing fits. The solution was to analyze,
rotate and compress the log files daily. This dramatically reduced log
file space by keeping the average daily disk usage fairly constant:
i.e. instead of using 2-5GB of disk space, the average usage is around
750MB.

NO ... you do not need to edit the profiles as well if you edit the
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts files by hand. I edited the ifcfg-eth0
file there and it changed all the files (in
/etc/sysconfig/networking/devices and /etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles
... it seems the files are hard links to the original. It might be a
good idea to _check_ the scripts in /etc/sysconfig/netowrking/devices
and /etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles though).

network files for the profile that redhat-config-created.

I can see on my machine that their is a profiles directory so I have no

Thanks for the replies. I called AMCC/JNI "support" this morning and they
said that they initially planned to offer closed source linux drivers then
make them open-source. The printed docs included with the card and
marketing stuff I found on the web say that this card is supported on linux.
Somewhere along the line, they decided (or AMCC decided) not to pursue linux
drivers, though and they will not be releasing a closed source driver. I
tried rolling a custom kernel with everything that even remotely seemed like
it might contain support for the card and it is still not recognized. Part
of the reason that I chose WBEL as the distro for this project is because of
the theoretical added reliability of a stable disto like RHEL, so I was
trying to get away from rolling my own kernel or using devices that are not
supported by the stock kernel. I will likely exchange the cards for Qlogic
2340's.

Thanks again,
Dave

What is required to run WhiteBox Linux on AMD Opteron systems is it needed
to run the full AMD64 port, or is it enough just to run the standard i386
dist with an opteron enabled kernel? Thinking of using something in the line
of 4GB of memory in the Opteron machines.

Lastly I would like to thank John for bringing us a great distro!
