You need to get rid of any previous install of MySQL or run rpm with 
the  -f switch to overwrite the previously installed files.

Much cleaner to remove the previous packages first.

I have 3 box's running MySQL 4, so am pretty sure it works / installs 
clean from the prebuild rpm files.
