I've had no problems with this in the past. Absolutely *NONE* -
The only problems according to the link you have provided revolve around
security-related stuff (ISAM versus MyISAM, and so forth). As for the
database breaking, I've seen *NO* occurances of this, and I've upgraded
from MySQL 3.x to MySQL 4.x on both RedHat (RPM) and Gentoo (Portage)
boxes.

On production boxes, I don't see why this *HAS* to be done. This is a
waste of time on the part of the sys admin and takes the server in
question down for a certain ammount of time.
Just my two cents. having to uninstall an old version of a daemon and
then installing the new one is *RIDICULOUS* and counter-productive. If
this is the norm, then I'd gladly switch to something that does *NOT*
require this (Oracle or PostgreSQL)
