First kernel updates for RHEL3 (and thus WBEL too) bring some SATA
updates. The latest U2 kernel update (kernel-2.4.21-15.EL) seems to have
more updates (this is about libata backport from 2.6 kernel and about
work of J. Garzik).

You are able to use 2.6 kernel via Arjan's repository by adding this
section to /etc/yum.conf:

[2.6testkernels]
name=Test Linux 2.6-test prerelease kernels for RHL9/rawhide
baseurl=http://people.redhat.com/arjanv/2.5/

You may check RH's knowledgebase for SATA term at http://www.redhat.com
too. They claiming support for Intel ICH5 and Silicon Image chipset and
about future Promise support too.

I had trouble with SATA performance with Silicon Image chipset in the
past but not checked latest kernel update yet. It seems that ICH5 is the
best solution on RHEL3/WBEL3.0 at this moment.
