I just did it the day before yesterday:

I copied my fonts to /etc/X11/lib/X11R6/fonts/TTF
then
cd /etc/X11/lib/X11R6/fonts/TTF
ttmkfdir
cp fonts.scale fonts.dir

Then edited /etc/fonts/fonts.conf added a new entry
<dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF</dir>

and then, as it didn't work properly, I edited /etc/X11/XF86Config and
added the line
FontPath "/etc/X11/lib/X11R6/fonts/TTF"

next to:
FontPath "unix/:-1"

So that should take care of all xft/non-xft apps.

I haven't tried gnumeric but I know that all my apps now have the same
ttf fonts :)

Hope that works for you

Gabriel
