This is 48.7% collision rate, which is high enough to cause really
serious problems; my memory is that 10% is too high. My 10Mbit
connection to a busy cable modem runs 2.5%.

These statistics indicate hardware problems with the network; my first
guess is that eth0 is not successfully negotiating a full-duplex
connection and falling back to half-duplex. I've seen cards fall back
to 10MBit half duplex - very slow. The error rates are also high; my
home system uses an old 3Com SS2 3000 100Mbit switch, and I'm running
billions of frames with no errors either way (backups are via a DLT
changer on one system, so network traffic gets high at times).
