thanks josh. i discovered (surprise, surprise!) that when i went 
straight gnome i didn't clean out my system as well as i thot i had. i 
actually stooped to using a gui (search for files....) and did the old 
fashioned kill-'em-one-at-time and felt chagrined at not figuring it out 
before i broadcast my impatience on the site.
and as for compile from source, i'd rather try to stay at least as close 
to the architecture as possible. laziness is next to godliness. compile 
is a lot more reliable, but if i liked it that much i'd be posting my 
woes on Gentoo or debians whine-mail, now.
