It's gotta be something stupid (that's my way...):
DSL works to the naked machine, but inserting the router breaks

lynksys router is BEFSR41

DSL modem connected to uplink port on router.
whitebox host connected to one of four ports on back of router.

router is 192.168.1.1
    set to get static ip address, got valid outside gate and DNS

host is 192.168.1.3
host sees router.

http://www.google.com can't be found

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0   is:
DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=none
BROADCAST=192.168.1.255
HWADDR=<...it's good>
IPADDR=192.168.1.3
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
NETWORK-192.168.1.0
ONBOOT=yes
TYPE=ethernet
USERCTL=no
PEERDNS=no
GATEWAY=192.168.1.1
