The problem was solve with: - "at the initial install prompt "linux=allowcddma" (without the quotes, of course)". and... - "you have to enable "legacy mode" for your CDROM. This is documented on the VMware web pages". Thanks to Mario Gamito, Kay Diederichs and William Hooper
