One approach is to only buy gigabit cards that have been supported by Linux for a couple years.  Chances are these will be supported by WBEL _and_ will have mature drivers.  Also, you will make your life easier if you install the card in a machine with at least 64-bit / 66Mhz PCI.  Some gigabit cards really don't like to run well on slower PCI setups.  I haven't messed around with gigabit cards for at least a year, so there may be some new wisdom.
