Thanks for the tip, and the recommendation from both yourself and Cameron  
means I'll start by looking at lirc this weekend.

The one I have came from an old PackardBell POS - it was spare after I moved 
all the good bits into a different case for a friend, so I claimed it. Have 
you tried electronics manufacturers like Maplins (or a US equivalent)?
