how many ethernet cards do you have in the system?   is this a fresh
install?  if so, what did you upgrade from?   are the modules loaded for
the ethernet card (use lsmod)?  is it using dhcp?  if so, is your dhcp
server functioning properly and is the network cable attached (too
obvious?)?  is the cable good?   is the hub/switch good that the box is
attached to?

many questions, many possibilities as to what it could be.
