Hi,

Because there is nothing really standard with USB modems,  you need a 
driver which is often supplied by the vendor . The problem is that most 
vendor don't provide the Linux driver but only the Windows driver.
With Linux, I think it is better to buy an Ethernet modem because you 
don't need any driver.

Ask your vendor, perhaps there is a third party vendor which  provides 
the drivers for Linux (possibly not free).
Take a look a linux-usb.org and ask in a mailing list.
