I should have been more clear. Even when I do make, it gives the same error:

 

[root at dyna106 2.6.9-5.0.5.EL-i686]# make

  CHK     include/linux/version.h

  CHK     include/asm-i386/asm_offsets.h

make[1]: *** No rule to make target `init/main.o', needed by
`init/built-in.o'.  Stop.

make: *** [init] Error 2
