A useful tool for scanning for rootkits is rkhunter. You can download at
http://www.rootkit.nl <http://www.rootkit.nl/>  . My suggestions for future
security:

 

1)       no remote root (ssh, ftp, etc)

2)       setup the firewall when you install. Just do it, even if you don't
know how, its all automated, learn later.

3)       Use rkhunter often and check your MD5's when you download stuff
