I sometimes e-mail the ISP who owns the IP of the person who was
attempting to log into my machine.  It hasn't been real effective, and
takes time -- but it can be satisfying.

One time, though, I reached the real sysadmin of the box who hadn't been
aware that his machine was doing such things.  He thanked me for the
tip, cleaned his box, and we all went on our way.  That was the
exception, though.
