I'd suggest mon http://www.kernel.org/software/mon

Been using it for many years to monitor a variety of services on a couple
hundred devices. Just as flexible as nagios but much less complex,
particularly when it comes to observing the information it provides.

It's more of a network monitor tool than a single-host tool, but you can
write monitoring modules (basically anything executable that outputs a
certain simple format to stdout) to do pretty much anything you want. Same
for the alerting side of things. You can script it to do whatever you want
in response to an alert. The typical result is email, or paging, but
again, anything you can write/script, you can do.
