There's two applications that work together to solve this. First, install
APF from http://www.rfxnetworks.com/apf.php and configure to expose only the
ports that need to be open.
Then, install BFD (Brute Force Detection) from
http://www.rfxnetworks.com/bfd.php and it will automatically block any
reoccuring attempts to log in. It works very well, I have these applications
on all my servers.

You might also like SIM (System Integrity Monitor) from
http://www.rfxnetworks.com/sim.php - it monitors your server for overload or
crashed services and renices the running processes or restarts the
processes. Very useful software.
