 From this and another suggestion by an off-line reply I ended up 
synchronizing the entries in /etc/modprobe.conf /etc/sysconfig/hwconf and 
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts. Which seems to work.


Kind of disappointing that system-config-network-gui was essentially useless 
as it would never modify or update the hardware entries.
