For starters, Boot the system and verify that
DNS is not working.  Before using the GUI look
at the contents of "/dev/resolv".

Is it what you expect?

BTW, this is why I distrust GUI admin tools
and almost never use them.

You need to describe the network configuration.  Are
you assigned a static address, or are you expected to
use DHCP?  Are there any firewalls that might be blocking
ping?  Can you ping other hosts on the local subnet?
