Start with

mii-tool eth0

and

ifconfig

Not easily :-)

I dual-booted 2.4 and 2.6 kernels for a while; it's very messy. Lots of
things changed between those two flavours, so there's quite a bit of
messing about to be done. IMO, you're better off sticking to a 2.4 kernel
unless there's a definite reason to change...
