Ed,
I set my protocol to allow only ssh2 connections ... restarted sshd ...
and tried to make an ssh1 connection.  I get this error when trying to
connect from ssh1 on another linux box:

Protocol major versions differ: 1 vs. 2

I get this error when using putty from windows and ssh1:

connection reset, protocol mismatch

In both cases, this is what was in the server's /var/log/secure log for
the attempted ssh1 connection .... 

Aug 12 20:47:09 server1 sshd[23840]: Did not receive identification
string from 192.168.0.4
----------------------------
SecureCRT supports both ssh1 and ssh2 protocols as a client ... are you
sure it isn't switching to ssh2.

Look in the log /var/log/secure on the server and it will tell you if a
connection ssh2 or not.
