Following William Hooper's suggestion I turned off kudzu and rebooted.

That solved the problem. The box has two NIC's in it, so I configured
one as a fixed IP and the other as DHCP.

I check both the fixed IP and DHCP connections, and both now work.
Halleluiah and many thanks for the suggestion.

I'm a bit puzzled as to why having kudzu running would interfere with
network connections, unless perhaps there is a corrupted hwconf
database...

Is there any problem leaving kudzu off (other than not recognizing new
hardware on bootup)?
