Yup, the install process would have prompted you for a root password and
not continued until you gave it one.  I'd guess that in all the fuss with
kudzu that firstboot never ran the first time you successfully booted,
else it would have prompted you to also setup a different username and
password for everyday use.  You should only use the root account for major
administration tasks.  In your case it looks like you are going to have to
login as root at least long enough to create an account.

Open a terminal (System Tools/Terminal)

Use adduser [username you want] to create the account.  It might let you 
get away with something different, but stick to all lowercase letters or 
numbers for a username or you will end up regretting it later.

Then use passwd [username] to set a password for the account.

Log out and try logging in as "you".

If you can't remember the root password you gave during install you have 
two choices.

a) reinstall

b) Boot into rescue mode, let it mount your filesystem and use the
suggested (it will give it onscreen) command to chroot into your installed
system.  Once there use the passwd command to set a new root password.
