Yesterday I posted a "plea" for collaboration on making a WBEL minimal
install run the latest and greatest Apache/MySQL and PHP/Perl. One person
responded with a question as to WHY I needed to run MySQL 4.x. The answer
was/is that I'm interested in the spatial data features.

While cruising the many forums, blogs and posts about how to get a leading
edge LAMP environment, I found some short postings that asked "why bother to
roll your own when there is such a good package that does it all".and like
many of "us" I rolled my eyes and said "yeah, right" to myself.

But then I made a life-changing move: I actually found the referenced
package, downloaded it and unpacked it on my WBEL minimal install machine
and "voila"..an absolutely marvelous working copy of Apache 2.0.52, MySQL
4.0.21, PHP4 and PHP5 and all the related and neat features included such as
SSL, gd-2.x, etc.

Its called "XAMPP for Linux" and can be found on Sourceforge or via their
website in Germany as http://www.apachefriends.org
<http://www.apachefriends.org/> .

I'm hoping to get access to a "development version" of XAMPP, but as I post
this, their link (via Sourceforge) seems to be broken. I'm sure I can and
will learn a bunch from these fine people in Germany. Check them out.

Please contact me off-line if you wish to collaborate. It only took a
couple minutes to make XAMPP work and a mere 5 more to make it start/stop
during boot/reboot.

Best regards from San Antonio, TX

Dave
