I'd buy second spare raid controller off of ebay. Put it on the shelf,
and leave it there. Its cheap insurance.   I've been doing that for
years, and its saved my butt a couple of times...

My experience with software raid is that it doesn't perform well under a
heavy disk load. Light loads are ok, but hardware raid is always better.

I also wouldn't use Maxtor ide drives. I've had 4 of 5 that I purchased
new fail in the last year. Needless to say, you get what you pay for...
