I would agree with this.  My experience with SW Raid has been ok, but my experience with 3Ware RAID cards has been excellent.  The performance of the hardware vs. software on our busy production machines is noticeable. I've had some issues with sw raid on RH, but with a 3ware I've yet to have a problem.
