found it.  /etc/openldap/ ...

And of course I was looking for .../slapd/...  careless.

Well files are there.  Perhaps it is installed.  I did run up2date 
thursday.  I suppose I can find out what it did then.  Now I get to get 
things configed in general and for Samba.
