Subject: [WBEL-users] installing tar files

i have 2 questions 1) does anyone have trouble installing tar files or
configureing them from the terminal or uncompressing them it seems like
every command that i put even when i did what the book says didnt work

                            2) now that i finally got to uncompress them am
stuck on getting it installed i do the hole config make install thing but
nothing happens i have the file in the dir that i want but cant install it
from the terminal ANY HINTS

  _____

Greetings

1) There is not real configuring of TAR files. The are just an archive
file, you can either archive or unarchive them. Think of it as winzip for
Linux but without the compression.

tar -xvf <filename.tar> will untar filename.tar

tar -cvf <file to tar> <file to tar2> <file to tar3> <filename.tar> will tar
up the three files into a file named <filename.tar>

2) Okay, have your read the README and INSTALL files? You should
always read them first for assistance.

First thing you want to make sure your development tools are installed.

Second you will need to look in the README for <prefix> or other command
line settings that are needed for the ./configure command.

Third, you can do ./configure and make as any user but you will most likely
need to su to root to the make install.

Now, based on your questions, I would suggest taking a look at the Linux
Documentation Project which has a lot of FAQs and HOWTOs.

It is located at: http://www.tldp.org/

Also, you might check out Running Linux, 4th Edition by O'Reilly from your
local library and see if that is a little more explanation.

Ray
