You mentioned you weren't using SCSI right now(?). If it doesn't *have* 
to be SCSI, I've had good results with 3ware's controllers 
(http://www.3ware.com/).

There's great support in the Linux kernel for them, and they're very fast.

You're probably thinking about striping (RAID-0) rather than spanning 
(linear mode). However, if you do mostly reads, RAID-1 acts much like 
RAID-0.

There are things you can pick apart in that, but it gets things mostly
