Benedikt-

Go ahead and get the APC if you like. And then stroll on over to:

http://www2.apcupsd.com/

APCUPSD really is a fabulous piece of work. With great doc, and it's
easy to configure. It will handle your shutdown flawlessly when your
batteries reach the % discharge you specify. It will also page you when
you go on batteries, when you come back online, and when you are gonna
shutdown.

I've used it for two years, and it is sweet.
