I am about to do the same thing, but I am heavily relying on LDAP. I want to build a large multi-national installation and it is taking a lot of effort. There are tools in /usr/share/doc/samba-3.0.9/LDAP/smbldap-tools from idealx.org that are very good in managing users, groups, and trusts in an LDAP environment.

It is not easy, I need to become very familiar with openssl, ldap, samba just to get things going with any compariable functionality of the micro$oft stuff. There is no question that it is the strength of the competition. 

As for telnet/ftp, why are you not using ssl? It is easy to set up and the putty tools from http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/ make it easy to use from windoze. Other benefits include only having to open 1 port for multiple services, and being able to very easily limit who has access.
