Anything is possible. I assume the computer was on over Easter -- if so,
it was doing stuff.

Does it drop you to a filesystem repair shell? If so, run fsck.ext3 on
the damaged filesystem. I've had some pretty messed up filesystems
thanks to hardware problems that fsck could fix.
