Yes, use the CDs for the upgrades rather than trying to do it via yum -
there's too much different for the RPM system to cope with it.

To make sure your system is OK I suggest you download memtest86 and boot
that - it will tell you if there are any fundamental problems with your
memory.  Secondly, I would fire up a Knoppix (or any other Live Distro)
CD to make sure that your system is OK.
