I know it is is not the typical behavior of most people: But if you use VMware, it is probably not a bad idea to read the documentation, especially known issues with Red Hat Linux:

and then the section "Getting a DHCP Address in a Red Hat Linux 9.0 Virtual Machine".
Few words about the reason: Red Hat Linux/Enterprise Linux seems to expect a more completly implemented DHCP server than in VMware Workstation and GSX Server. Therefore, you must "cheat" and define check_link_down() to be always non-zero (false) in the interface configuration, which is typically /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 .
