This is the preferred method.  up2date solves dependencies across yum and 
apt repos.  However apt support isn't included out of the box for two 
reasons:

1.  Redundant.  There is no need to include both yum and apt support.  It 
solves no real world problems and could possibly cause problems if both 
were enabled in up2date for the same repo.  Haven't heard of anyone 
intentionally trying it though.

2.  Apt doesn't support bi-arch environments like x86_64 and probably
won't until Debian gets their x86_64 port up to a full bi-arch release,
sometime after Sarge.  Their current port is just that, a basic port to
x86_64 that treats x86_64 as a totally new arch like PPC or Sparc.
