Along these lines, does anyone know how much overhead Software RAID 
introduces?

I took a look at the Hardware Compatibility List 
(http://hardware.redhat.com/hcl/) and didn't see any mention of the RAID 
card you mentioned - if you have a spare machine to try it on first, I'd 
do that... You just never know...
