Here are a couple of utilities that have helped me quite a bit at work 
and at home recently.

Linux
  System Rescue CD - great for backing up systems - bare metal restore 
capability

  Stand-alone memory test utility - self-booting from a tiny .iso!

Windows - we all use it somewhere, right?
  Ultra VNC - an improved client and server over the realvnc implementation

  Need SCP/SFTP in a GUI on Windows?  Look no further than WinSCP

   Windows Terminal emulation that is very xterm-like:
