Hi!

1) Did you check regarding the passive/active FTP issue? This means do 
you have port 113 open or at least not on DROP on your firewall? This 
often causes timeout errors if you try using active FTP.

2) I have seen kind of similar errors when the server could not resolve 
incoming IP addresses. Perhaps your options are set a way that it 
resolves IP addresses of incoming connections but can't because of lack 
of properly stated and reachable nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf.

These are the only two things I can think of at the moment.
