I believe the kernel package itself calls installkernel to add itself to
grub and or lilo.  This way yum/up2date/apt, etc doesn't have to have
special features to deal with booting.

That is a major bummer.  That makes it a tough call as to which solution
to try since maintaining two sets of repo metadata is asking for trouble
but not having an easy way to update the mirror list is also bad.
