I just want to comment on the thread model (RHEL3 versus native kernel).
If you want to run a native kernel on a RHEL3 box instead of the RH one,
you need to
mv /lib/tls /lib/tls-dontuse
and repeat this step after (the rare) glibc updates. This way you get
rid of the thread-model related issues.
